Caring for your parents in India from abroad

Distance is the hardest part of being an NRI with ageing parents. You want them to stay in their own home, in the city they love — but you cannot be there to check in, drive them to the doctor, or simply know they are alright today.
Here is a practical playbook families use to arrange care that actually works across time zones.
1. Map what your parents genuinely need
Care is not one thing. Separate it into buckets: medical (nursing, doctor visits, medication), daily living (meals, mobility, errands), safety (emergencies, falls), and emotional (company, routine). Most parents need a little of several, not a full-time arrangement — and naming the buckets makes the next decisions far easier.
2. Insist on verified, trained caregivers
From abroad, you cannot supervise in person, so trust has to be built into the service itself. Look for background verification, training, and a provider who takes responsibility for the caregiver — not an informal arrangement that leaves you anxious and unprotected.
3. Make updates non-negotiable
The difference between worrying and resting is information. The right arrangement sends you an update after every visit — a note on how your parent is, their vitals, what was done, ideally with a photo. This is the single feature NRIs tell us matters most.
4. Plan for emergencies before they happen
Know in advance: which hospital, who can reach your parent quickly, who holds a key, and how you will be contacted. A care provider with 24/7 emergency response and hospital coordination removes the worst of the helplessness that distance brings.
5. Don't forget companionship
Practical care keeps a parent safe; company keeps them well. Regular visits, conversation and a familiar friendly face do as much for an elderly parent's health as any check-up — and they ease the guilt that so many NRI children carry.
